CULTURE NEWS

  • Clara Baldwin is the first profoundly deaf Fur Rondy Queen today, and her crowning has prompted the festival to add American Sign Language interpreter services costing nearly $15,000 with over $12,000 raised so far.  Your Alaska Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteors lit up the winter night across Alaska and sparked local interest as residents shared videos of the bright display. Anchorage watchers are encouraged to look up and enjoy the natural show as the season unfolds.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage is doubling its Healthy Spaces cleanup team by adding 10 crew members this spring to address trash buildup after winter; Mayor Suzanne LaFrance said the move uses funds from Solid Waste Services ($4 surcharge). REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Cook Inlet Housing Authority will break ground this summer on a 72-unit apartment complex for adults 55 and older in Airport Heights using relaxed zoning rules approved by the Assembly to lower costs; the first phase (24 units) is expected to finish in fall 2027.  Anchorage Daily News

  • After evacuating their village in October, Kwigillingok students have kept their basketball tradition alive by forming the Lady Eagles, who now play in Bethel and Anchorage. They will compete in the Coastal Conference in March + keep their community spirit strong.  KBRW
