  • Sergie and the White Seal is an indigenous retelling of Kipling’s classic by two St. Paul Islanders who reimagine the tale and address overfishing in the Bering Sea — the book will publish in June by the Alaska Native Language Center and feature at an Arctic arts summit in Sweden.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at three Anchorage elementary schools attended class on Wednesday while families coped with the closure announcement, and local officials are expected to offer more guidance soon.  Alaska's News Source
  • Covenant House Alaska and the DOT launch Work Ready Alaska — a program offering technical training, job coaching, and supports like housing and mental health services to help at-risk youth prepare for construction and transportation careers; the initiative starts March 1 and aims to certify 120 students.  Your Alaska Link
  • The Anchorage School Board voted by a 4-3 margin Tuesday night to close Lake Otis, Fire Lake, and Campbell STEM elementary schools at the end of this school year due to a $90 million deficit, with students reassigned before an April vote on a tax levy for teacher support.  Your Alaska Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Feb. 17, the U.S. Department of Justice defended the EPA veto of the Pebble copper and gold project, saying the decision protects Bristol Bay’s salmon habitat — a key asset for communities 200 miles southwest of Anchorage. The filing reinforced efforts to prevent mining that could harm the watershed.  Anchorage Daily News
  • State Rep. Andy Josephson introduced a bill that would require insurance companies to cover more than one prosthetic or orthotic device so patients can safely pursue sports + outdoor activities. Backed by local advocates and supported by the Governor's Council on Disabilities, the measure would take effect in 2028.  Alaska Public Media

  • UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, who announced his retirement for family reasons, will lead his team in today's 5:15 p.m. contest against Western Oregon at the Alaska Airlines Center before a farewell game against conference-leading Saint Martin's on Saturday night — a sendoff for both the retiring coach and graduating seniors.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Nome brothers Wilson and Oliver Hoogendorn finished a seven-day climb to the Kilimanjaro summit in Africa, planting an Alaska flag at 19,000 feet for their third major peak.
