  • House of Bread in Anchorage is baking colorful king cakes with yellow, purple, and green sprinkles for Mardi Gras, and the bakery serves the traditional plastic baby on the side so families can enjoy a Southern custom.  Your Alaska Link

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grande Portage Resources wants to build a 15-foot-wide, 1.3-mile-long road with helicopter pads along Herbert River for mine support near Herbert Glacier — the proposal is open for public comment until March 13 at 5 p.m.  KTOO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School Board will vote on a proposed budget on Feb. 24 that cuts programs and staff to fill a $90 million gap. The cuts may affect teachers, nurses, and sports while a potential tax levy (prop 9) may later restore some funding.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage Fire Academy is training candidates to earn state certifications in Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, EMT 1 and hazardous materials operations — a move aimed at replacing 70 retiring firefighters. Applications for the fall and spring programs are open until May 15.  Your Alaska Link
  • The council approved a limit on chum salmon bycatch in the pollock fleet, capping it at 45,000 fish per year to protect Western Alaska salmon. The measure, following four days of public testimony, will go into effect in 2028 — balancing conservation with commercial needs.  KTOO
  • State Sen. Jesse Kiehl is drafting legislation to address water pollution from cruise ship scrubbers that discharge harmful waste into local waters. The proposal could follow actions taken elsewhere to reduce pollution and protect marine life.  Alaska Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAA senior gymnasts who committed when the program's future was uncertain are set to compete in their final home meets this weekend at Alaska Airlines Center. They will perform on Friday at 7 p.m. for Stick It to Cancer Night and on Sunday at 2 p.m. for Senior Night.  Alaska's News Source
  • Wasilla’s Hailee Giacobbe received her second Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year award in cross-country, and East Anchorage’s Katahdin Staples earned his first honor following state championships last fall.   • Anchorage cross-country skier Gus Schumacher, paired with Vermonter Ben Ogden, competes in the team sprint at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics today; after early setbacks, he recovered and the duo remains ranked second among 27 teams (facing strong competition from Norway).  Alaska Public Media
