  • Your Alaska Link, the Food Bank of Alaska and local businesses are running Feed the Love to collect nonperishable food for families during a period of low donations, with drop-off sites such as Mo’s Deli accepting items in Anchorage through Thursday, Feb. 20.  Your Alaska Link
  • The YMCA of Alaska on Lake Otis Parkway is set to begin a $6M expansion that will add a basketball court, walking track, free-weight area, and parking in July, with work expected to finish in fall.   • Alaska Wild Berry Products lit a 10-foot Valentine’s heart with nearly 30,000 lights outside its Juneau Street location. The festive display will brighten the community all month.  Your Alaska Link

BUSINESS NEWS

  • About 250 ConocoPhillips North Slope oil field workers voted on Monday, July 8, 2024, to unionize their teams for the Kuparuk, Alpine and Willow fields. ConocoPhillips said it would bargain in good faith as unions were set to address job security and employee benefits during a period of global layoffs.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Chugach Avalanche Center is hosting a free avalanche rescue workshop at the Glen Alps Trailhead on Sunday, Feb. 15 with sessions from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and advance registration is required (rentals are available).  Your Alaska Link
  • Anchorage School Board has asked district administrators to propose new school closure or consolidation options by Feb. 14 + Fire Lake and Lake Otis are among the schools being reconsidered ahead of a Feb. 17 meeting to help fill a $90M budget gap.  Anchorage Daily News

  • The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said a federal oil lease sale for 5.5 million acres in the National Petroleum Reserve is delayed until March 18 because a legally required notice did not publish on schedule; it is the first of five mandated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.  Anchorage Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anchorage Health Department reports there are no measles cases in the city today, though unvaccinated residents face increased risk — they are advised to talk to their doctor about the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.  Your Alaska Link

  • Anchorage goalie Jeremy Swayman, who turned his season around with a standout performance at the World Championship in Stockholm, will debut at the Winter Olympics in Milan on Thursday at 11:10 a.m. as Team USA faces Latvia, crediting his Alaskan roots and family support for his comeback.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On Monday, mushers left Circle City in the Yukon Quest 750 as Josi Shelley led her team onto the Yukon River. Race organizers forecast lows near -50 — calm winds are expected along the route to help competitors navigate icy conditions.  Alaska Public Media
  • Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin clinched a silver medal in Mixed Doubles curling on Tuesday morning, making history by earning the first curling medal for an American woman (a milestone for the sport). Anchorage’s curling community now celebrates this proud achievement.  Alaska's News Source
