COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Troop 220’s trailer was stolen from its storage at the Scouting Service Center, disrupting camping plans for 32 scouts, and the troop has raised over $14K on GoFundMe to replace the gear & resume outdoor activities.  Your Alaska Link

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anchorage-based Midnight Sun Theatre will stage a local run of 'Tick, Tick Boom!' on Apr. 10 before heading to Edinburgh in August as the first Alaskan company to join the International Collegiate Theatre Festival. The five-person team is raising $40,000 plus covering travel, lodging, and performance rights.  Alaska's News Source
  • Renovations have begun at the Alaska Native Heritage Center as Phase Two of its $25M campaign, and upgrades to the Theater and Crossroads will create new Indigenous-centered spaces for storytelling.   • At Bear Valley Elementary on Jan. 28, 16 spellers competed in a tense spelling bee + Coralyn Akins won by spelling bracken correctly and will represent the school in the regional contest.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage School Board approved a new teachers contract on Tuesday that gives teachers a 5% raise in the first two years and a 3% raise in the fourth year—plus extra monthly health benefits. The deal comes as the district faces a nearly $90M deficit and may cut some programs.  Your Alaska Link
  • A sixth-grader at Northern Lights ABC School won the spelling bee on Feb. 4 and surprised everyone with their achievement. The student said, 'I didn’t expect to win' — a moment celebrated by the school community.  Alaska's News Source

  • A 4.4 earthquake shook 28 miles east of Hayes Volcano at 6:24 a.m. Wednesday (located 61 miles northwest of Anchorage).  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage is set to begin construction on a new downtown library branch in the Historic City Hall building on 4th Avenue this summer. The project, funded by a $7M trust and a $2.5M Covid relief grant, is expected to open in early 2027.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage Assembly voted Tuesday to add a free ride day on the People Mover bus for people 60 and over on Fridays, which takes effect on March 6. This builds on the free Wednesday rides and offers a cost-saving alternative to pricier service (AnchorRIDES).  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence Alaska Medical Center is leveraging the Da Vinci 5 robotic device to perform minimally invasive gynecologic cancer surgeries, reducing recovery time and allowing more patients to avoid prolonged hospital stays.
