ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire in east Anchorage sent one person to the hospital and two dogs to an emergency vet (fire crews arrived quickly to contain the blaze).  Alaska's News Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alaska’s population grew by 0.2% over the past year as 1,649 residents were added through more births than deaths, despite a net loss from migration. An economist noted that the steady growth in the elderly group (affecting healthcare needs) may increase pressure on local services.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage School District announced a $90 million deficit that may lead to cuts in several sports programs, though football + basketball remain secure. The board will host a public work session Tuesday at 3 p.m. to gather input from parents and community members.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alaska SeaLife Center has taken in a male ringed seal that was found near a North Slope oilfield in December. Oilfield workers drilled ice breathing holes to guide the seal back to safety, and the animal will now serve as an ambassador to help people learn about its species as Arctic conditions change.  Alaska's News Source
  • Researchers from Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game have fitted 12 grizzlies with collar cameras on the North Slope to capture their foraging habits and interactions with other wildlife; the two-year project will help track how bears gather food + adapt to the environment.  Anchorage Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • In March 1952 at Providence Hospital, nurses walked out after receiving only a small pay raise and better hours, and five nurse leaders were fired. Union members said the dismissals were punishment for asking for fair working conditions.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Alaska Ski for Women marked 30 years of supporting local female skiers and continues to host community skiing events today. The organization will offer seasonal competitions in Anchorage to boost participation and athletic spirit.  Alaska's News Source
  • The 30th annual Alaska Ski for Women took place Sunday on freshly groomed Kincaid trails and featured freestyle and classic races, an untimed Party Wave race, and a costume contest that raised money for local causes; winners included former Olympian Sue Forbes (classic) and Leah Besh (freestyle).  Alaska's News Source
