COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, record-breaking snowfall made roads extremely dangerous and plow drivers at Snowman LLC received over 100 calls between 7 a.m. and noon. Owner Glenn Allen Trombly urged drivers to give plow trucks extra space to clear driveways safely.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAA students faced record snowfall on Tuesday as the University stayed open until 2 p.m. to help them attend class — they braved tough winter conditions to get to lessons.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Jan. 27, the state board approved UAA’s school psychology master’s program to ease the shortage of school psychologists. The new program — subject to NASP accreditation — will help future graduates earn licenses to serve students.  KBRW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Seattle-based Fishing Vessel Owners’ Association asked the IPHC to lower the recreational halibut limit to one fish due to a declining resource, but the decision was deferred to the North Pacific Management Council on Jan. 27.   • At a Senate meeting on Jan. 27, AIDEA (state-owned) reported a $17 million dividend and $1.6 billion net position while discussing the Ambler Road project that is set to create over 3,000 jobs, generate $1 billion in profit, secure state permits, and provide private industrial access.  Must Read Alaska
  • After a year of planning, the Alaska DMV now accepts mobile IDs at Anchorage and Juneau airports; travelers can use the app at TSA checkpoints — but must carry a physical ID. Some locals praise the convenience while others worry about privacy.  Your Alaska Link
