  • Alaskans gathered today to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a multicultural celebration that highlighted his civil rights legacy and brought diverse community members together across the region.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage School District and Education Association reached a tentative three-year contract covering July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2029 that boosts salaries, benefits and working conditions for 2,800 educators. A ratification vote by teachers is planned for late January while board approval is expected in early February.  Your Alaska Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alaska’s legal community hosted its annual MLK Day Clinics on Jan. 19 to expand legal access across the state. The free clinics offered advice at several locations & engaged volunteer support to help residents.  Alaska's News Source
  • The International Pacific Halibut Commission will vote Thursday to cut private anglers' halibut limit to one fish — Alaska lawmakers contend domestic regulators should decide instead, warning the proposal may hurt food security for local families.  Alaska's News Source
  • Mary Peltola launched her U.S. Senate campaign on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 49th State Brewing in Anchorage, where she highlighted local cost of living concerns and plans to reach rural communities (she avoided national politics at the event).  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage’s Wolverines beat the Fairbanks Ice Dogs 4-2 on Saturday after a shootout win Friday, moving ahead in the Club 49 Cup race. In the Governor’s Cup series, UAA won Friday while UAF won Saturday with a 4-1 score.  Anchorage Daily News
