  • Jirdes Winther Baxter (the last known survivor of the 1925 serum run) died at 101 in early January, ending a key living link to the historic effort that delivered life-saving treatment to remote areas.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Community Diaper Pantry faces a funding shortfall after losing state alcohol tax support — which had provided about $100k annually. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hilcorp affiliate filed paperwork with federal regulators to convert the shuttered Kenai LNG terminal in Nikiski into the state's first LNG import facility, seeking approval by July 31 to deliver up to 20 billion cubic feet of gas annually as forecasts predict a regional supply deficit starting next year.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Donlin Gold developers plan to decide on project financing in 2027 if state regulators adopt rules for a contract-carrier gas pipeline that could run 316 miles from Anchorage’s Beluga plant to the mine near the Kuskokwim River and serve local communities as well.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Alyeska Resort is ramping up operations after nearly two feet of powder fell on the upper mountain overnight — wind and avalanche mitigation efforts are being tested.  Alaska's News Source
  • Icy roads and snowfall disrupted travel and school operations in Southcentral and the Interior yesterday, with KPBSD schools closing, highway sections from Fort Greely to Paxson shut following an avalanche at Thompson Pass, and Alyeska closing its upper mountain amid storm preparations.  Alaska's News Source

  • On Wednesday, an Anchorage judge ruled that a state law limiting live music events at breweries, distilleries, and wineries violates free speech rights and may allow more local shows. He upheld restrictions on pool games (like pool tables and dartboards) while agencies review further steps.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alaska is launching a five-year, $1.3 billion program to transform rural health care. State officials and health workers met in Anchorage to plan improvements in maternal health, preventive care and access via workshops (convenings) that will shape care amid expected coverage changes.  Alaska Public Media
  • Anchorage Fire Department launched Alaska’s first on-site addiction treatment mobile unit that offers buprenorphine to overdose survivors. The pilot—introduced yesterday—will track recovery and emergency care benefits so similar programs can spread statewide.  Alaska Public Media

  • South Anchorage High School hosted its inaugural girls basketball memorial tournament for former player Amelia Nowak, whose dream was to unite teammates through friendly competition.
