COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Global Credit Union Foundation has announced a $55,000 donation to support local nonprofits (Big Brothers Big Sisters, Stand Down Alaska, Covenant House Alaska). The funds form part of its 2025 quarterly support and will help serve military families, homeless veterans and at risk youth.  Your Alaska Link
  • The Anchorage Weekender presents eight local events. Events include a new moon snowshoe hike at Campbell Creek Science Center Friday (6-7 p.m.), improv comedy at The Nave Friday and Saturday, pro wrestling at the Arctic Rec Center Saturday, and outdoor films at Cuddy Park Sunday.  KBRW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alaska Airlines updated its loyalty program to Atmos Rewards (new earning options and Starlink internet enhance its service) and will soon let passengers choose how to earn points. The company also announced its largest fleet order and upcoming nonstop routes from Anchorage.  KBRW
  • Donlin Gold developers will complete a bankable feasibility study in 2027 to decide on their mine project, pending state rules for a contract-carrier pipeline. The 316-mile natural gas line will stretch from Anchorage’s Beluga power plant to near the Kuskokwim River and may also serve local communities.  Alaska Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Metlakatla Indian Community will remove 27 abandoned vessels from Annette Islands Reserve with help from the BoatUS Foundation to protect fisheries and reduce pollution + crews in Yakutat and Sitka will also clear derelict vessels as part of a federal cleanup effort.  Your Alaska Link
  • A federal proposal would expand oil drilling off Alaska's coast and is open for public comment until Jan. 23 in the Beaufort, Chukchi and Cook Inlet areas. Local Native communities say the plan will harm wildlife and food security that many rely on for hunting and fishing.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The MOA team is working to prepare Anchorage streets for rain and ice fall expected this week. Crews cleared snow and pushed berms on roads so drains can work and traffic can flow when temperatures drop.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage Superior Court ruled that breweries may now host live entertainment regularly without securing a permit — a decision that allows local venues to schedule music, dancing and other expressive events.   • Anchorage recorded 45 outdoor deaths among unhoused individuals in 2025, slightly fewer than the 50 noted in previous years. Officials say fentanyl + opioid use and shelter instability remain key factors, reflecting ongoing public health challenges in the community.  Alaska Public Media
