ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An ice dam on Campbell Creek has flooded Elmore Road's northbound lane, creating slippery conditions for drivers. City crews are working to remove water and ice but have not yet provided a timeline for reopening.  Your Alaska Link

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fur Rendezvous adds a new tradition as 49th State Brewing hosts a First Tap Party on Thursday, Jan. 15 (5:30-8:30 p.m.) where locals can toast the new Rondy Brew IPA with live music, brewery tours, and the option to buy cans for take-home.  Your Alaska Link
  • On Jan. 7, the Alaska Native Medical Center brought a Russian Orthodox Christmas celebration to Yagheli Shesh Qenq'a Anchorage Native Primary Care Center, where singers performed in several languages and young men spun stars with icons. Attendees said the tradition (starring) provides comfort to patients who cannot join family celebrations.  KBRW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent winter storms have weakened the snowpack around Anchorage, prompting the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center to issue a warning and advise travelers to avoid steep slopes and travel with a partner. Avalanches have already occurred (Turnagain Pass), so careful terrain management is urged.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mary Peltola announced today her run for U.S. Senate to challenge Senator Dan Sullivan in a high-stakes race aimed at putting Alaska first. She said her campaign will focus on issues such as affordability and health care access while energizing local voters.  The Alaska Current
  • The Supreme Court rejected Alaska’s petition Monday to rule on rural subsistence fishing rights on state and federal lands. Ahtna Incorporated welcomed the ruling + said it upholds ANILCA protections for local communities.  Alaska's News Source
  • Mary Peltola announced Monday her run for U.S. Senate to challenge incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan, emphasizing an Alaska first approach with themes of fish, family and freedom. The nonpartisan primary is set for August as candidates vie through a ranked choice ballot in November.  Alaska Public Media
  • Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Assembly members have proposed a single $12M education levy on the April 7 ballot to reduce an $83M shortfall in local schools. The measure would cost about $27.40 per $100K (roughly $110 for a $400K home) and aims to avoid class size growth and program cuts.  Your Alaska Link

  • Musher Jessie Holmes won his second straight Copper Basin 300 in Glennallen on Monday — completing the 290-mile race in two days, six hours, and 49 minutes — as Cody Strathe finished 14 minutes later and Dave Turner rounded out the top three.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alex Fruean, a junior forward from Barrow, averages 25.2 points per game and leads the Whalers to wins over bigger teams. He, who holds a 4.0-GPA, will compete at South Anchorage High School this weekend while inspiring young ballers.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Bogus Creek 150 sled dog race is postponed due to extreme cold and wind chills nearing 40 below zero that risk the safety of dogs and mushers. The K300 race remains scheduled to begin Jan. 23.  Alaska Public Media
