COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jeanine Moorman launches the Balin Scott Miller Foundation on Monday, Jan. 12 to offer climbing gear and shoe grants to climbers under 24. The foundation (which requires safety education in grant applications) aims to honor Balin's legacy.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Overland!, an Alaska-made comedy retelling Blanche Stewart Scott’s 1910 cross-country feat, will have its final Anchorage fundraiser performance Friday at 7 p.m. at Sidney Laurence Theater before heading to New York for a short run.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $18 million to Alaska Pacific University in December—marking the largest unrestricted gift in the college’s history. The funds nearly doubled APU’s endowment and will support tuition assistance and campus upgrades.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The Anchorage School District faced transportation delays Thursday, Jan. 8 as extreme cold made it hard to start buses — affected families were notified through robocalls. The district reported the issue and provided updates as conditions improved.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fish and Game warned residents on Jan. 8 that heavy snow in the highlands is driving moose into neighborhoods in search of forage. They advised caution as human-moose conflicts may increase.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Dunleavy declared Napaskiak a disaster after a December power outage froze pipes + left residents without running water for a month. Tribal leaders and crews are working to repair the waterline as bottled water continues to arrive.  Alaska Public Media
