- ➤ Otis, a Bernese Mountain Dog, was rescued by Alyeska ski patrollers from a steep ravine in Girdwood on Dec. 29 after being missing for 13 days — his calm return to the aid room brought much relief to the rescue team. Alaska Public Media
- ➤ Anchorage adds new signage on Goose Loop to help hikers and bikers navigate safely (a partnership between Anchorage Parks Foundation and UAA supports the project). Additional signs will appear citywide next year. Your Alaska Link

- ➤ A fire swept through Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage over the weekend, causing partial destruction and a collapsed roof while renovations were in progress, and firefighters responded + crews worked overnight to manage the damage. Your Alaska Link
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Record snowfall has left Pelican’s 91 residents without seaplane access since Nov. 28 — delaying mail, medicine, and produce while emergency helicopters cover urgent needs. A catamaran is set to arrive today and a state ferry on Jan. 10 to restore supply routes. KBRW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Anchorage officials added emergency beds to year-round shelters and opened the Anchorage Safety Center for warmth on Monday, Jan. 5 during a frigid cold snap, ensuring locals had a safe place to stay. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Anchorage Police released their outdoor death report for 2025 showing that June had the highest number of outdoor deaths with seven, followed by August and September, and city officials said they replaced the traditional warming center with emergency beds in year-round shelters. - ➤ Anchorage officials are ensuring safety for people experiencing homelessness in the cold by adding 450 emergency beds to shelters and allowing voluntary access to the Safety Center (next to the Anchorage Jail).
